The leader and facilitator of this educational experience is Mr. Medoune Yacine Gueye (also known as Baba Dame Gueye). Mr. Gueye is a traditional Griot from Senegal West Africa. He has had extensive training through initiation in the culture and traditional rhythms, songs and dances of the Mandingo, Jolla, Bambara, Se’ere and Wolof ethnic groups in the Sene-Gambian region of West Africa. He is proficient in the poly-rhythmic musical forms of the Djembe, Sabar, Sawrouba Kutiro drums and balaphon.
A lifetime educator, it is Mr. Gueye’s sole objective to strengthen and preserve West African traditional cultural art forms through drum, dance and song instruction, workshops and lectures in arts and educational organizations. With each initiative Mr. Gueye undertakes, his focus is always on nurturing and broadening the creative thought process and the application of artistic cultural themes through traditional West African performing arts. This makes him the best person to lead this educational excursion to Senegal.
